If you have a missing tooth, you might feel self-conscious about it. Often, people refrain from smiling or talking too much because they don’t want the toothless gap to be visible. Thankfully, dental procedures are available to replace missing teeth. These include dentures and dental implants. Dentures are typically worn by elderly individuals and are a set of false teeth that can be easily inserted and removed by the patient. These prosthetic devices fit into your maxillary arch or mandibular arch to replace missing upper teeth or lower teeth, respectively. Unlike other dental devices, dentures do not require the dentist to regularly monitor you.
Your dentist will show you how to insert them, advise you on how to care for your dentures as well as help you maintain proper oral hygiene. Dentures do not require constant supervision as braces or other dental procedures do. Dental implants on the other hand are surgically inserted into the bone in what is called a root-form endosseous implant. What this means is that the artificial implant resembles the root of the tooth and is placed within the bone by drilling through the bone. Here, the bone tissue surrounds the implant and fuses to secure it in place within your jaw. After the implant is drilled into the bone, a crown is placed over top of it to resemble a normal tooth.
The dentist doing the implant will take care to shade it a color consistent with that of the surrounding teeth. Since this is a relatively major dental surgery, it is best to see a specializing oral surgeon or implant dentist for the procedure. This does sound similar to a dental bridge. The difference between dental bridges and dental implants is that dental implants resemble the tooth root so much that the implant prevents bone erosion that can occur in other types of dental replacements. Dental implants are more expensive to receive than bridges, however if inserted properly; the results are long-lasting and effective.
