If you are the owner of curved teeth, which for some reason were not corrected in childhood, you should not worry. Adults do not often dare to start the orthodontic treatment. And there is a reason for this: people are afraid of difficult and uncomfortable treatment with the classic braces made of metal and attached to the outside of the teeth.
Unaesthetic and discomfort usually deter many patients from orthodontic treatment, that’s why the producers of braces are constantly improving it. Thanks to it, invisible braces, which are hidden on the inside of the teeth, were invented. But "wild dream" of all the developers is a technology that could ensure the correction of bite without braces. Thanks to their efforts in dentistry, today a new way of treatment of malocclusion and of straightening teeth with the help of clear aligners is available, which could partially replace traditional braces, and in some cases they have become a real alternative.
Transparent aligners for correcting the bite are similar to those offered by dentists for whitening teeth at home. They are made individually for each patient in special dental laboratories or factories. Their transparence and ability to bear against the teeth make orthodontic treatment comfortable for the patient and completely invisible to others. From the point of view of aesthetics and transparency, even the most aesthetic braces which are made of sapphire cannot be compared with the aligners. And if you will compare the aligners and lingual brackets in order to find out which one is more comfortable, the obvious convenience of wearing of removable clear aligners is beyond comparison.
The principle of the treatment with the aligners differs significantly from the braces. In each aligner (from 10 to 40 aligners can be needed for the treatment) micro movements of certain teeth are built. Unlike braces, aligners are worn almost all day with short breaks for food and drink. After couple of weeks of wearing, one aligner will be replaced by the following, and the last one will be used for fastening the result. All treatment can last for a period from 12 months to 2 years, depending on the complexity of the case and diligence of the patient.
Of course we can be happy that orthodontic treatment with aligners is comfortable and completely transparent, but somebody can face a huge disappointment. The most significant drawback is that aligners will not suit perfectly to everyone. In order not to discredit dentists, producers of aligners have identified a number of problems that the system is able to cope with and warned about those situations when the use of aligners will be pointless. For example, it is impossible to turn the tooth the around its axis with the help of aligners. It is also impossible to eliminate severe crowding and severe malocclusion. So which shortcomings can eliminate clear aligners?
The system of aligners is suitable for the orthodontic treatment of adult patients, and in some cases they can be used for teens whose baby teeth were replaced by indigenous and jaw growth is already finished. Aligners can perfectly cope with dental gaps, and they do it much more efficient than braces. They can cope with correction of little crowding, fix simple malocclusion and mesial bite when the lower jaw is moved forward more than the upper jaw. This system can also be useful in situations when you need to move separate teeth, complete the treatment or consolidate the results after wearing braces.
The first step on the way to a beautiful smile will be the consultation with the orthodontist on the subject of whether clear aligners will be able to help you in correcting the bite or it's not your case. If the system is suitable, then casts of the teeth will be made and sent to a laboratory where they will be scanned and the 3D model will be projected. On the computer screen, operator with local orthodontists will plan the process of moving teeth, using the prescription given by your orthodontist.
The result is a video that shows the movement of the patient's teeth step by step. The doctor estimates treatment and makes his own adjustments. Typically, this can be done for several times. And only when the patient is satisfied, the process of making aligners starts. Consider that period from the first consultation until the treatment starts takes at least 2 months. When the aligners are ready, they will be put on the teeth, and it is incomparably easier than the complicated procedure of installation of the bracket system.
